Egypt Opens Rafah Border Crossing

RAFAH, February 19, 2011 (WAFA) – The Egyptian authorities Saturday opened the exit lane of Rafah border crossing to allow Gazans stuck in Egypt to return home.

At least 256 people had come back into Gaza from Egypt Friday when the crossing was opened for two hours.

Number of Gazans wishing to return to Gaza was estimated at about 1500, and the Egyptian side was facilitating their speedy return, according to witnesses.

The Egyptian authorities said 154,857 people had used the Rafah crossing since it was first opened at the beginning of June, about half of them travelling into Egypt.

In the same period, 1182 tons of medicines, medical equipment and formula milk were brought into Gaza, as well as ambulances, generators, blankets, tents and other humanitarian aid items.
