Israeli Court Extends Child Detention by 100 Days

RAMALLAH, February 2, 2011 (WAFA) - An Israeli military court Tuesday extended the detention by 100 days of Islam Saleh Ayyoub, 14, from the village of Nabi Saleh, 20 kilometers west of Ramallah.

The Popular Resistance Movement in Nabi Saleh said in a press release that the Ofer military court order came after Ayyoub’s family refused an earlier order to expel him to Ramallah.

Ayyoub was ordered to live in a known address in Ramallah and have a land telephone line so that the Israeli army can call him to make sure he is home, making him virtually under house arrest. The court also set a 1000 NIS ($330) fine.

The movement condemned the court order and said that the family’s refusal stems from absolute rejection of the idea of expulsion and exclusion, so as not to constitute a new precedent that can be adopted by the Israeli authorities against other children and activists.
