Plea for Help by Palestinians Stranded at Cairo Airport

CAIRO, January 31, 2011 (WAFA) - Palestinian passengers stranded at Cairo airport Monday appealed to the Palestinian Authority to help them leave Egypt and return home, according to some of the passengers.

Some 60 Palestinians, who have been stuck in the airport for four days, have contacted several humanitarian and human rights organizations in an effort to hasten their departure.

The stranded Palestinians are suffering from inhumane and difficult conditions owing to the “harsh and arbitrary” measures being taken against them by Egyptian airport officials, according to some of the stranded.

They tried contacting the Palestinian Embassy in Cairo but there was no response.

The Palestinian embassy has issued several telephone numbers for Palestinians in Egypt to call in case of emergency or for help. Palestine’s ambassador to Egypt said none of the Palestinians were hurt in the latest protests.

Most of Egypt’s transportation has been paralyzed and borders have been closed, with anti-government protests continuing for the sixth day.
