UN Official Defends Palestinian Negotiators

JERUSALEM, January 24, 2011 (WAFA) - United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Robert Serry Monday defended the Palestinian negotiators saying they were committed to securing the rights of the Palestinian people.

Serry was commenting on reports Al Jazeera satellite channel has aired Sunday night on Palestinian-Israeli negotiations accusing the Palestinian Authority of agreeing to cede areas in Jerusalem to Israel.

“I welcome robust political debate,” said Serry in a statement. “But some of the commentary I have seen conveys an inaccurate impression.”

Serry said that “I can personally attest to the commitment of the Palestinian leadership to secure the legitimate rights and interests of the Palestinian people, based on international law and UN resolutions.”

He urged both Palestinians and Israelis “to show their readiness for a negotiated peace based on a two state solution, and to deliver on the ground.”

He said that “it is to the genuine credit of the Palestinian leadership that they are doing so, and this is widely acknowledged in the United Nations.”
