Palestine to Submit to UN Draft Resolution on Settlements on Wednesday

RAMALLAH, January 18, 2011 (WAFA) – Arab group at the United Nations will submit on Wednesday to the UN Security Council a Palestinian draft resolution demanding a condemnation of Jewish settlement building in Palestinian Territory.

Head of the PLO Negotiations Department Saeb Erekat told Voice of Palestine that President Mahmoud Abbas gave instructions to the Palestine Permanent Observor to the UN Riyad Mansour to continue in discussions of the draft resolution condemning Jewish settlements in the West Bank in order to submit it for a vote.

The voting on the resolution will not take place for few more days.

Erekat said:”Israeli government’s policies, expanding settlements actions, raids,  assassinations, imposing facts on ground, the continuing of Apartheid Wall building and tightening siege  on Gaza which indicates that  Israeli government is fully responsible for the collapse of the peace process.”

He added: “He asked members of the UN Security Council to support the Palestinian efforts to issue a resolution condemning the Israeli settlements in the Palestinian Territory including East Jerusalem since 1967 as it is illegal and against the international law.”

Erekat said the United States has informed the Palestinians that it was opposed to this resolution. He said he hopes the US will not veto
