Newspaper review: President’s remarks during Essebsi’s funeral focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Sunday, July 28, 2019 (WAFA) – Remarks made by President Mahmoud Abbas during the funeral ceremony of late Tunisian leader Beji Caid Essebsi in Tunis, Tunisia, made headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Sunday.

The dailies quoted Abbas as saying during the ceremony, “Tunisia has a special place in our hearts. We cannot forget that from Tunisia, we started our trip back to Palestine.”

On a different subject, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said Palestinians in Khan Younes, south of the Gaza Strip, took part yesterday in the funeral of slain Ahmad al-Farra, 23, who was shot dead by Israeli forces at Gaza border during the Great March of Return protests on Friday.

The two dailies said the Arab-dominated parties in Israel have decided to restructure the Joint Arab List running for the Israeli Knesset in the upcoming September election.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said around 2,900 Palestinian pilgrims from the West Bank began yesterday their trip to Makkah in Saudi Arabia for the annual pilgrimage.

Al-Ayyam said Jordanian King Abdullah II said the two-state solution was the only way to ending the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh confirmed during a meeting with a Human Rights Watch delegation that no single Palestinian will be prosecuted for practicing his/her freedom of expression.

It said US President Donald Trump hit out at Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, a prominent black critic, calling him a "brutal bully" who should concentrate on cleaning up his "disgusting, rat and rodent infested" Baltimore district rather than criticizing the work of US immigration officers on the Mexican border.
