Newspapers Review: Prime Minister’s visit to Iraq highlighted in dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, July 16, 2019 (WAFA) – The visit of Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh to Iraq and his meetings there occupied a section of the front page of today’s Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida made this topic its main front page story with a headline saying Shtayyeh discussed with his Iraqi counterpart, Adel Abdul Mahdi, economic cooperation and joint investments.

Al-Ayyam discussed this visit on its front page but lower on the page and had almost the same headline as al-Hayat al-Jadida, while al-Quds reported on it on the top corner box with the same headline as the other dailies.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds made Israeli raids and demolitions their main front page story.

The headline in al-Quds said: “Raid of Qalandia refugee camp, Ras Khamis (Shufat refugee camp) and Issawiyeh (an East Jerusalem neighborhood).”

Al-Ayyam main front page headline said: “Occupation demolishes foundations of a building and carries out several raids and large-scale detention campaign in many areas.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the demolition and said Israel detained 17 Palestinians, including three women.

In other stories in al-Ayyam, Hamas distancing itself from statements by Fathi Hammad, one of its top leaders, regarding killing Jews anywhere in the world was highlighted on the front page.

It also said a Hamas delegation headed by Mousa Abu Marzouq starts a visit to Moscow.

The situation of Palestinians in Lebanon, particularly with the decision of the Lebanese Labor Minister in which he closed all work opportunities for non-Lebanese, including Palestinian refugees, was highlighted on the front page of the three dailies.

They said the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has intensified its contacts with the Lebanese government to avert any serious repercussions of this move and that Palestinians were protesting this decision.

Al-Quds said a Waqf committee investigating Israeli police raid of Bab al-Rahma prayer area inside Al-Aqsa Mosque has completed its report and delivered it to Jordan, which is in charge of the Muslim holy places in occupied East Jerusalem.

It said the Arab Joint List in Israeli elections has postponed its press conference on announcing its stand from running in the elections as a list or otherwise.

Tweets by US President Donald Trump seen as racist targeting non-while members of US Congress were also reported on the front page of the dailies.
