Newspapers Review: The funeral of the Issawiyeh man killed by Israeli police focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, July 02, 2019 (WAFA) – The funeral of Mohammad Obeid of Issawiyeh in occupied East Jerusalem, who was killed by Israeli police in cold blood on Thursday and his body withheld for several days, and the Israeli measures in Jerusalem were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

The papers said thousands of people took part in the funeral as tough Israeli police measures against the neighborhood continued with raids and arrests.

Another East Jerusalem neighborhood, Silwan, may see some of its buildings collapse due to the underground Israeli digs, said al-Ayyam daily.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Arabs have condemned the participation of US officials in the opening of a settler tunnel in Silwan.

In other news, al-Ayyam quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying that his government still refuses to accept from Israel incomplete clearance revenues and that the public employees are going to get only 60 percent of their June salary.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the cabinet discussed the formation of a legal team to follow up on what it described as the Israeli piracy of Palestinian revenues.

Al-Quds also said the cabinet has decided to provide money for East Jerusalem hospitals.

It said the British interior secretary, who is a Muslim, visited Al-Aqsa Mosque in the company of the head of the Waqf department Azzam Khatib who briefed the British official on the latest developments at the Muslim holy site.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas received in his office a delegation from the Kuwaiti ministry of education who is the country to recruit teachers.

It also said Syrian President Bashar Assad gave President Abbas a Quran manuscript written in gold.

It said yesterday was the 25th anniversary for the return of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to the homeland following the signing of the Oslo accords.
