RAMALLAH, Saturday, June 29, 2019 (WAFA) – Israeli crackdown on protests in the West Bank and Gaza that left dozens of Palestinians injured were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today,
The headlines of the main front page story in the three dailies said dozens of Palestinians were injured in parts of the West Bank and East Jerusalem and on the Gaza border with Israel as a result of Israeli army crackdown on the protests. Injuries were reported to be from rubber bullets and excessive use of teargas.
The papers focused mainly on the events in Issawiyeh neighborhood of East Jerusalem where Israeli forces shot and killed 21-year-old Mohammad Obeid two days ago resulting in a popular uproar in the area and clashes with the Israeli forces that has also resulted in the detention of dozens of people.
Al-Ayyam said in other news that Israel and Hamas have reached a new understanding on calm resulting in Israel allowing fuel into Gaza and expanding the fishing zone in return for a halt in flying incendiary balloons from Gaza into bordering Israeli towns.
Al-Quds said the Hamas-Israel understanding was reached with intervention from Egypt and the United Nations and said that Israel has threatened Gaza: either stop the balloons or face war.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the war of words between Palestinian official Saeb Erekat and Jason Greenblatt, the American envoy to the Middle East who adopted and defends the Israeli position from the conflict with the Palestinians.
Al-Quds also included the criticism of the Palestinian Foreign Ministry of Greenblatt’s statements.
Al-Ayyam quoted Greenblatt saying that the illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory should be called cities and neighborhoods instead of settlements and that the UN resolutions on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict do not provide for a workable solution.
It quoted US ambassador to Israel David Friedman saying former US President Barack Obama left the White House with a “parting gift of betrayal” to Israel in reference to Security Council resolution 2334.
It said demonstrators in Baghdad attacked the Bahraini embassy and set fire to the Israeli flag while raising the Palestinian and Iraqi flags in protest against the US-sponsored Peace to Prosperity workshop that was held in the Bahraini capital, Manama, last week.
Al-Quds said the Israeli settlement group active in occupied Jerusalem. ElAd, is going to inaugurate tomorrow a tunnel from Silwan neighborhood to the Buraq plaza, also known as the Western Wall. It quoted an Israeli group saying that six years of digging under homes in Silwan is going to lead to disastrous results.
It said Israeli airport employees are going to start a general strike on Tuesday.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted former French prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, criticizing American attempt to buy the Palestinians.
