Newspapers review: President Abbas’ remarks on Palestinian rights focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Friday, June 28, 2019 (WAFA) – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks on Palestinian national rights during a press conference with his Chilean counterpart Sebastian Piñera in Ramallah hit the front page headlines in Friday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

President Abbas was reported in the dailies affirming that the Palestinian national rights are not traded for money.

He was also reported in al-Ayyam stressing that the US administration has disqualified itself to sponsor the peace process.

He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that any economic projects ]solutions[ must be preceded by a political solution.

Piñera was reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that the two-state solution is the only way to peace.

Additionally, the dailies reported that Israeli police killed a Palestinian and injured four others during confrontations in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Issawiya.

The slain Palestinian was identified as Mohammad Samir Obeid, 20.

They said that Israeli forces handed several Palestinian families orders to demolish their structures and buildings in Qalandiya refugee camp and Kafr Aqab town, north of Jerusalem.

According to al-Ayyam, Israeli forces detained 20 Palestinians in multiple overnights raids across the West Bank.

Al-Quds said that Israel has decided to deduct additional 14 million shekels (USD $3.9 million) from the tax revenues it collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority.

It added that Gaza’s incendiary balloons started 25 fires in Gaza periphery settlements in southern Israel. Al-Ayyam said that the blazes started by the balloons reached 27.

Furthermore, al-Quds highlighted Xinua’s News Analysis: Observers see Bahrain workshop as failure, forecast moves against Palestinians.

As part of the news analysis, it reported presidential advisor for economic affairs Mohammad Mustafa telling Xinhua that Washington’s offer of economic solutions without a political horizon was a “failed path” and would not be accepted by the Palestinians.

Regarding the recent US-led economic workshop in Bahrain, al-Quds reported Palestinian officials arguing that the Palestinian people has triumphed over the workshop.

It said that in an interview with CNN, White House senior advisor Jared Kushner declined to say whether the US supports the two-state solution.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Russia lambasting the US-led economic workshop as “counterproductive” and affirmed that any initiative should support the two-state solution.

Al-Ayyam reported Prime Minister Moahmmad Shtayyeh stating that US President Donald Trump’s economic approach to Palestinian-Israeli peace was “divorced from reality” and unlikely to evolve into a political plan.

Shtayyeh’s remarks appeared in Reuters’ piece Palestinian PM expects no political plan from U.S. Bahrain workshop.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that scores of Israeli settlers forced their way into East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

With connection to Egyptian efforts to restore calm in Gaza, al-Quds quoted well-informed Palestinian sources that a date has not been set for the arrival of the Egyptian delegation to the besieged Gaza Strip and that the efforts to restore calm are currently stalled.

Al-Ayyam reported Palestinian Health Minister Mai Kaileh confirming that water pollution was the main cause of cases of poisoning in Marda village, north of Salfit.

It is worth noting that up to 850 Palestinians from the village of Marda were infected by organisms in polluted water between Monday and Wednesday. The pollution is the result of the wastewater discharged from a nearby Israeli settlement.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported First Deputy Secretary-General of the South African Socialist Party Solly Mapaila stating that there was no way to realize peace except through complying with international law.
