Newspapers Review: President’s decision to stop Social Security Law focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, January 29, 2019 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused on their Tuesday front page on the decision by President Mahmoud  Abbas to stop implementation of the controversial Social Security Law.

They said the public and the political factions have welcomed this decision and as a result a general strike that was planned for today against the law was called off.

In other news, al-Quds reported on an Israeli plan to build a new large settlement south of Qalqilya in the north of the West Bank.

At the same time, said the paper, settlers took over Palestinian land south of Bethlehem and attacked people in Yatta, both in the south of the West Bank.

It also said Israel plans to displace 36,000 Palestinians from the Naqab area in the south of Israel.

It reported as well on the provocative display of Jewish marriage rituals by an extremist Israeli lawmaker inside the yards of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, an Islamic holy place, in clear violation of the sanctity of the place.

Al-Quds said the Qatari fund was distributed to the needy in Gaza and printed a picture showing people standing in line at a post office in Gaza in order to get money from this fund.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, saying Israel’s decision to cancel the mandate of the Temperature International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) will contribute to an escalation on the ground.

It quoted the head of the Palestinian official media Ahmad Assaf saying at a conference that Jerusalem is at the top of the national priorities.

Al-Ayyam said Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah has placed his government at the disposal of President Abbas following a recommendation by Fatah to form a new government composed of the political factions in the Palestine Liberation Organization.

It said the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem has distributed demolition orders to Palestinian homes in Silwan and Jabal al-Mukabbir neighborhoods of occupied Jerusalem.

It said Israel has closed off 7,000 dunums of land in the Ouja area in the Jordan Valley.
