RAMALLAH, September 17, 2018 (WAFA) – The killing of an Israeli settler by a Palestinian youth to the south of Bethlehem in the southern West Bank dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Monday.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that a Palestinian youth stabbed two settlers near the illegal settlement bloc of Gush Etzion, south of Bethlehem, killing one and injuring the other.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in this regard that Khalil Jabarin, 17, who comes from the southern West Bank town of Yatta, was shot and injured before being detained for allegedly killing an Israeli settler near Gush Etzion.

On the other hand, al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to highlight President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks during separate meetings with a delegation of former Israeli ministers and lawmakers as well as UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krähenbühl in Ramallah.

Expressing his opposition to violence following the stabbing attack, Abbas reportedly stated that neither killing nor settlement construction and forced displacement of Palestinians would bring about peace and security for any party in the region.

According to al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida Israeli settlers blocked main roads across the West Bank and hurled stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling from Nablus to Bethlehem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Palestinians confronted and hurled stones at a bus loaded with Israeli soldiers that reportedly unintentionally entered Qalandia refugee camp near Ramallah, injuring five soldiers.

It added that Israeli forces raided Jenin refugee camp and continued to block the entrances of Azzun town, east of the northern West Bank city of Qalqiliya.

Additionally, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat was reported in al-Quds stating that the Palestinian leadership and people would continue to adhere to their clear principles and that the US and Israel were not interested in peace.

He was also reported in al-Ayyam stating that his remarks during an interview with the Israeli newspaper Maariv were distorted.

Highlighting the worsening Palestinian-US relations, the dailies reported that the family of the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) General Delegation to the US, Ambassador Husam Zomlot, was ordered to leave the US after its visas were revoked.

They added that US authorities ordered the PLO office to cease all operations and close down all bank accounts. They were ordered to vacate the premises by October 13.

Spotlighting the situation in Khan al-Ahmar, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli forces quelled an open-ended sit-in at the village slated for demolition.

The dailies added that Israeli occupation authorities have decided to deport American-French law professor Frank Romano, who was arrested on Friday while protesting attempts by bulldozers to block roads to the Palestinian Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar.

Moreover, chairman of the PLO’s Jerusalem Department, Adnan Husseini was reported in al-Quds warning against an Israeli plan to operate a cable car to be built near the Buraq Square, known to Jews as the Western Wall Plaza in Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida added that the plan was slammed by top Israeli architects.

According to al-Ayyam, Israeli forces shot and injured five Palestinians to the east of Khan Younes and Rafah in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Suhaib Abed al-Salam Abu Kashef, 16, succumbed to his wounds he had sustained during the Great March of Return protests to the east of Khan Younes.

Abu Kashef was reportedly shot and injured by Israeli forces during protests on August 3, east of Khan Younes.

Spotlighting Egyptian-sponsored efforts to achieve intra-Palestinian reconciliation, al-Ayyam said that a Fatah delegation is scheduled to arrive in Cairo on Monday to continue talks with Egyptian officials on reconciliation.

Furthermore, Head of the PLO Refugees Affairs Department Ahmad Abu Holi was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that commencing the process of rubble clearance in the Palestinian refugee camp of al-Yarmouk in Syria sends the message that the PLO would not abandon refugees.

Al-Ayyam highlighted remarks by Ahed Tamimi, the icon of Palestinian civil protests, as she participated in an event organized by Association France Palestine Solidarite in Seine-Saint-Denis in France.

Tamimi was reported saying that Palestinians are “fighters for freedom” and that “Jerusalem will remain the capital of Palestine.”

Foreign Minister Riyad Malki was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida announcing that several states were about to recognize the State of Palestine and pledging that the Palestinian leadership would continue efforts to sue Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also highlighted remarks by the French Consul General in Jerusalem regarding the situation in the occupied territories.
