Newspapers review: Israeli court ruling on demolition of Khan al-Ahmar focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, September 6, 2018 (WAFA) – The Israeli High Court’s ruling giving the green light for the military to demolish the Palestinian Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar and forcibly evicting its 180 residents hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said the Israeli High Court issued a ruling giving the green light for the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar and forcible displacement of its residents.

Condemning the court’s ruling, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov was reported in al-Quds stating: “Demolitions undermine the prospects for two-state solution.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported head of the Palestinian Committee Against the Wall and Settlements Walid Assaf declaring the beginning of an open-ended sit-in at Khan al-Ahmar.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian national factions calling for an en masse protests in defense of Khan al-Ahmar.

Additionally, Paraguay’s announcement that it would relocate its embassy to Israel back to Tel Aviv also dominated the front page headlines in the dailies.

They said that Paraguay reversed its decision of May 21 to relocate its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, moving it back to Tel Aviv.

Highlighting Palestinian official reaction, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported President’s Office welcoming this “courageous move” and “this decision which falls in line with international resolutions.”

It added that the Palestinian government praising the move as an indication of successful diplomatic efforts spearheaded by President Mahmoud Abbas himself.

The dailies spotlighted the demolition of two Palestinian homes in the East Jerusalem neighborhoods of Silwan and Beit Hanina.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds added in its main news item that Israeli occupation authorities approved the construction of 75 new settler units in Beit Hanina.

Moreover, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported the United Kingdom announcing a new aid package of £7 million to the UN relief agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

According to al-Quds, Hamas expressed its dissatisfaction with the stalled reconciliation talks and frustrated over the conditions set by Abbas for achieving reconciliation.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Jordan’s King Abdullah II commenting on the US proposal calling for the creation of a Palestinian-Jordanian confederation.

He was reported expressing Jordan’s rejection of confederation and reiterating that “there is no alternative to the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

According to al-Quds, Israeli forces detained several Palestinians and injured others during raids into Abu Dis town, east of Jerusalem, and Kufr Qaddoum village, east of Qalqiliya city.

It reported Palestinian ambassador to Cairo Diab Allouh holding the UN fully responsible for the continuity of UNRWA and saying that US President Donald Trump’s administration was attempting to blackmail Palestinians.

According to al-Ayyam, a number of Palestinian judges appointed to the High Court resigned in protest of proposed amendments that would affect the Judicial Authority Law.
