Newspapers Review: US decision to stop funding UNRWA focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, September 2, 2018 (WAFA) – News about reactions, rejection and condemnation of the US decision to stop all funding of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) hit the front pages of the three Palestinians Arabic dailies on Sunday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds reported that presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said that President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership are considering going to the United Nations General Assembly  and the Security Council to challenge the US decision.

They also reported about Jordan’s reaction to the decision, saying it has dangerous consequences.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported a statement by Pierre Krähenbühl, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, in an open letter where he expressed deep regret and disappointment at the nature of the US decision to end all funding to agency, saying to Palestinians “we will not fail you. Our partnership with you is stronger than ever. Your Dignity is Priceless.”

According to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, President Mahmoud Abbas Saturday received a delegation of the Egyptian General Intelligence at the presidential headquarters in the city of Ramallah, the occupied West Bank, and discussed the latest developments related to the Palestinian national reconciliation.

Al-Quds said that President Abbas and his Egyptian counterpart, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, are going to meet soon to discuss the latest in the region.

Al-Quds said that Israeli settlers from the illegal Giv‘at Ronim outpost Saturday attacked a Palestinian home in the village of Bourin, south of Nablus, in the occupied West Bank, with stones. No injuries were reported.

The paper said that earlier Saturday, settlers from the illegal Yitzhar settlement chopped 20 live trees owned by a local farmer in Bourin.

The Israeli cabinet is set to meet on Sunday to discuss the situation in Gaza and Syria, according to al-Ayyam.

Al-Quds said that American singer Lana Del Rey has decided to postpone her performance in Israel until she can perform for both Palestinian and Israeli fans.
