RAMALLAH, August 29, 2018 (WAFA) – The latest developments in Gaza regarding the calm with Israel and the reconciliation with the Palestinian Authority as well as the Israeli demolition of the family home of a Palestinian who attacked and killed a settler in the West Bank were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Wednesday.
The main front page headline in al-Quds quoted Hamas saying that the calm with Israel is not a political deal and aims to end the blockade. It also quoted Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmad saying Fatah handed the Egyptians its response to the reconciliation and that it rejects the principle of “calm for calm.”
Al-Ayyam quoted Ahmad saying that the principle of “calm for calm” is a perpetuation of the occupation and that reconciliation should be achieved before the calm agreement.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida, whose main front page story focused on the meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and an Israeli delegation in Ramallah, quoted in another story Fatah official Hussein al-Sheikh saying that Abbas stressed that a seaport in Cyprus and an airport in Eilat are part of the calm deal with Israel and therefore they will not happen.
It said the cabinet called on Hamas to accept the president’s reunification plan between the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Al-Ayyam highlighted in its main front page headline the Israeli demolition of the family home of Mohammad Dar Yousef in the village of Kobar near Ramallah. This story was also highlighted on the front page of the other two dailies.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam highlighted the Israeli District Court in Jerusalem ruling not to evacuate a settlement outpost that was built on private Palestinian land and said that settlement in the West Bank is legal if was done in “good intentions.”
Al-Quds said the nationalist forces in Jerusalem called for defending Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood against Israeli settlement plans.
It also quoted the Washington Post saying that US President Donald Trump is bringing agony to the Palestinians instead of peace.
It said the Palestinian committee to return bodies of Palestinians held by Israel has called on the UN Human Rights Council to pressure Israel to turn over the corpses to be properly buried.
Al-Ayyam quoted UN Special Coordinator Nickolay Mladenov saying urgent aid is needed to prevent collapse of services provided in Gaza.
