Palestinians slammed with administrative detention days before ending sentence

JERUSALEM, August 20, 2018 (WAFA) – The Israeli authorities slammed two Palestinian prisoners with a six-month administrative detention order days before they were supposed to be freed, according to local sources.

Nasser Subhi Abu Khdeir, 57, from Shufat in East Jerusalem, was serving a 16-month prison sentence for resisting the Israeli occupation and was supposed to be released on Thursday when his sentence was changed to administrative detention at the request of the Israeli secret service.

This is the 11th time Abu Khdeir, who was previously injured in an explosion, has been served to spend time in prison, which totaled 16 years.

His family said Abu Khdeir is not in good health and suffers from shortness of breath due to problems with his lungs and severe back pain from disc complications.

The Israeli authorities had on Friday also slammed a Palestinian woman prisoner with administrative detention for six months on the day she was supposed to be released, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.

It said Fida Ikhlil, 23, from the Hebron area, was getting ready to be freed after serving a 95-day sentence for alleged incitement through her writings when she was informed that she will not be getting out but rather she has been served with administrative detention for six months.

Administrative detention means holding someone in prison for a ed period of time that could be constantly renewed and extended indefinitely without charge of trial and based on secret evidence not even known to the prisoner’s lawyer.

Over 430 Palestinians are currently held in administrative detention in Israel, many of them have been serving more than one term.
