Newspapers Review: The Central Council, reconciliation, Israeli demolitions focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, August 15, 2018 (WAFA) – Each of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted a different topic as its main front page story on Wednesday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida made the meeting tonight of the Palestinian Central Council as its main top front page story saying that President Abbas is going to open the meeting with an important keynote speech.

Al-Quds said in its main front page story that several factions sent delegations to Cairo for talks on Palestinian reconciliation and calm on the borders with Israel. It said, quoting a source, that the coming days are going to be decisive on the issue of calm.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli army demolished a home in Deir Dibwan, Ramallah district, and prepares to demolish two other homes in Amari refugee camp and Kobar village, also in Ramallah area.

All the papers reported on these three main topics on their front page as well, and included shorter stories expanding on and evolving around these topics.

Al-Ayyam said the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and the Palestinian National Initiative have decided to boycott the Central Council meeting.

It said, quoting an Israeli official telling the Los Angeles Times, that a truce deal with Hamas is ready.

Al-Quds said, quoting an American official, saying that the United States is going to support a truce deal between Israel and Hamas with or without the approval of the Palestinian Authority.

It said Israel is going to reopen Karm Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) commercial crossing with Gaza today to allow goods in and out after a period of calm has been observed.

It said, quoting the Israeli Maarive newspaper, that Israel has deducted compensation for its collaborators from the Palestinian tax revenues.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Palestinian police uncovered marijuana fields in the Jenin area in the north of the West Bank.

It also said the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA has announced it will decide on Thursday whether the new schoolyear for its schools is going to open on time or be delayed due to its severe financial crisis.
