RAMALLAH, August 7, 2018 (WAFA) – The campaign in Washington against the Palestinian refugees was highlighted on the front page of the Tuesday issue of the Palestinian Arabic dailies.
Al-Ayyam made this story, taken from the German news agency, dpa, its main front page story. Dpa quoted a senior White House official saying that United Nations aid to the Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, had negative results and therefore its mandate has to be changed.
The paper quoted the Palestinian refugee affairs department saying UNRWA mandate in not up to the United States.
The main front page story in al-Quds talked about Israeli attacks on Gaza and the West Bank through either shelling, such as in Gaza, or demolishing homes such as in Hebron area, water pipes such as in the Jordan Valley or stealing land in Jamaeen, northern West Bank.
It said Israel demolished 32 structures in the West Bank during July, based on a report.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted a visit by President Mahmoud Abbas to Pilgrims City in Jericho as pilgrims start their Haj to Mecca season.
It quoted Abbas saying he rejects Canada’s interference in internal Saudi affairs.
It also said the Arab League stood by Saudi Arabia in its conflict with Canada over the latter’s criticism of the Saudi human rights record.
In other news, al-Quds said, based on report in the London-based al-Hayat newspaper, that the Egyptians have changed their intra-Palestinian reconciliation paper to suit the remarks of President Abbas.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted a Fatah official saying Hamas must return to the original reconciliation agreement and that the meeting Hamas called for in Gaza on Sunday came to vindicate it.
Al-Ayyam quoted sources saying that Hamas wants to reach a gradual agreement on truce with Israel starting with a halt to the border protests and the incendiary balloons.
However, the paper quoted the national committee of the Great Return March stressing continuation of the protests and its rejection of partial agreements.
It quoted the Israeli daily Haaretz saying that the Israeli army has recommended easing the economic sanctions on Gaza.
Al-Quds said an Israel officer responsible for “executing” a Palestinian youth near Qalandia checkpoint has been promoted.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the conflict between the insurance companies and hospitals has ended and hospitals are once again accepting insurance of patients.
