Newspapers Review: Gaza border return protests focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, August 4, 2018 (WAFA) – The protests at the Gaza border with Israel and Israeli army killing of a Palestinians and injuring hundreds others were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday. A second Palestinian, a child, died of his wounds early Saturday.

The papers reported as well on the weekly Friday protests in the West Bank against the Israeli occupation that also resulted in injuries from Israeli army gunfire but no deaths.

The truce between Israel and Hamas was highlighted on the front page of the dailies.

Al-Quds quoted Arab sources saying that Hamas decided to accept an Egyptian plan for calm on the Gaza-Israel border and al-Ayyam said Hamas leadership is considering a long-term truce with Israel and it has agreed to that in principle and asked for guarantees for implementation.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas has decided to form a committee of nine people headed by Qadri Abu Bakr to oversee prisoners’ affairs. Abu Bakr will replace the current head of the Prisoners’ Affairs Commission Issa Qaraqe.

This story was reported in the other two dailies with al-Quds also quoting Ahmad Tamimi, member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, saying the prisoners department was not cancelled following allegation that it was cancelled under Israel and American pressure.

The papers also reported on the protests by Palestinians inside Israel against the racist Israeli Nation-State law. The protests were in Nazareth and al-Maker.

Al-Quds said in a report by its Washington correspondent that the United States has paid its dues to the Palestinian Authority’s security forces because this would be in “American interest.”

It said refugees in the West Bank continued protests against measures by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) of dismissing  contract workers.

The paper reported in a story that hospitals were forcing patients who have insurance to bear the extra costs following of a dispute with insurance companies as the physicians has called for not accepting the health cards by the insurance companies. It said the government is not saying anything about all of this.
