Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight latest with Khan al-Ahmar

RAMALLAH, August 2, 2018 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on their Thursday issue front page the latest regarding the Palestinian Khan al-Ahmar village, east of Jerusalem, which Israel wants to demolish and replace by a Jewish settlement.

The papers said the Israeli High Court postponed any decision on the village, that is whether to let the army demolish it or not, until Sunday so that both sides, the Palestinians and Israelis, present their argument against and for demolition.

Meanwhile, the papers printed pictures of Palestinian activists protesting at Khan al-Ahmar against the demolition in anticipation of the court ruling.

Al-Ayyam said in a main front page story that Israel has inaugurated a new settlement project in Silwan, a Palestinian neighborhood just outside the wall of Jerusalem’s Old City. It said an American delegation that included a former presidential candidate attended the opening ceremony.

Al-Quds said in its main front page story that Cairo is leaning toward introducing changes on its Palestinian reconciliation paper.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida made the report about assigning tasks and departments in the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as its main front page story. This report was also published on the front page of the other two dailies.

In other news, Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the general intelligence service foiled an attempt to leak West Bank land to Israeli settlers and arrested people involved in this attempt.

It quoted the president of the Palestinian National Council announcing that the PLO’s Central Council is going to convene in Ramallah on August 15.

It also quoted Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah saying that ending the division and reconciliation is a priority for his government.

It said Hamas in Gaza prevented a meeting for families of prisoners.

Al-Quds said on its front page that Israel detained Palestinians in Jalazoun refugee camp for allegedly opening fire at nearby Beit El settlement.

It also said in a report by its Washington correspondent that Washington is determined to continue with its stand against financing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

It published a report from WAFA that said that the normal person pays for differences between hospitals and insurance companies.

It also said 90 cases of poisoning were reported the West Bank villages of Beit Furik and Beit Dajan, while al-Ayyam put the number at 100.

Al-Ayyam also said Amnesty International said an Israeli company was spying on one of its staff.

It said two bodies were found dead in a car in Hebron and police was investigating.
