Egypt condemns failed attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Hamdallah

CAIRO, March 13, 2018 (WAFA) - Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned on Tuesday the failed attempt to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in a terrorist operation in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the ministry congratulated the Palestinian people and the Palestinian National Authority for the survival of the Prime Minister.

"Such brutal terrorist attacks targeting or disrupting the Palestinian reconciliation process will always fail," the statement said.

It stressed that Egypt will continue its tireless efforts to achieve reconciliation and enable the Palestinians to manage the affairs of their state according to a unified and comprehensive vision that fulfills the aspirations of the Palestinian people.

Earlier in the day, explosion targeted the convoy of Hamdallah after crossing into Gaza to inaugurate a wastewater treatment plant.

Seven of Hamdallah‘s bodyguards were injured in the attack and three vehicles of the convoy were damaged.

Upon his return to Ramallah, the Prime Minister said this attack will not prevent the government from completing its mission in Gaza and achieving national reconciliation.

"We will continue working until we return to Gaza and unify our ranks. There will be no homeland without Gaza," he stressed.

Head of Palestinian Intelligence Majid Faraj, who accompanied Hamdallah in the convoy, described the attack as "a cowardly act aimed at harming national unity."

Meanwhile, the Palestinian presidency condemned the attack and held Hamas movement responsible for what it described "a premeditated aggression."
