Newspapers Review: President Abbas, King Abdullah summit focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, March 13, 2018 (WAFA) – News about the meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II of Jordan in Amman hit the front page of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Tuesday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds reported that President Abbas briefed king Abdullah on the latest developments regarding the city of Jerusalem, particularly following US recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel and US decision to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May, amidst Israeli escalation. Both leaders also discussed bilateral relations and ways to promote them in all fields.

The three dailies reported on the clashes that erupted between Palestinians and Israeli forces in the West Bank on Monday.

They said that at least eight Palestinians were shot and injured with live ammunition, including one seriously, during clashes that broke out as Israeli forces attacked a students’ march at the northern entrance of al-Bireh, adjacent to the city of Ramallah.

Israeli settlers Monday attacked a number of Palestinian farmers while they were tending to their agricultural land in the town of Huwwara, south of Nablus, according to the dailies.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah and Head of the General Intelligence Service Majid Faraj will head to the Gaza Strip on Tuesday to inaugurate a water desalination plant.

A statement by Issa Qaraqe, head of the Palestinian Authority‘s Detainees Commission, was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida. He said that Palestinian administrative detainees in Israeli jails will declare a hunger strike starting next month.

Al-Ayyam said that according to the New York Times, US President Donald Trump’s peace plan will not call for a two-state solution between Palestinians and Israelis. It said that the Trump administration is finalizing the deal and will make it public soon.

Al-Quds made a story about US moves in the region as its top main front page topic quoting what it described as “informed sources” telling the newspaper that many changes are going to happen in the Middle East along with dangerous developments after the US and Israel strengthen their alliance and Arab countries join in.

It said Trump may reveal his so called deal of the century during the visit to Washington of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has called for the possibility of imposing complete Israeli sovereignty on lands of the occupied West Bank, as reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam.

Al-Quds reported on Israeli plans to open a new road around Jerusalem that is expected to go through the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiyeh.
