RAMALLAH, March 12, 2018 (WAFA) - The Israeli Supreme Court Monday dismissed an appeal filed on behalf of two minor prisoners aged 16 and 17 from Jerusalem to reduce their 11- year- sentence, according to Mufid al-Haj, attorney of the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS).
In a statement issued on Monday al-Haj reported that the Israeli Court argued that detention is used to deter individuals from taking action, and considered its dismissal decision as appropriate.
Haj said, "The court‘s decision was expected considering previous sentences by Israeli courts based on the political approach adopted by the Israeli occupation, particularly with regard to Palestinians in Jerusalem and children. There are dozens of Jerusalem children who face long sentences, especially after the series of legal amendments adopted by the occupation in the past two years."
The two minors, Abu Mayaleh and Taha, were arrested by the Israeli authorities, in January 2016, and were sentenced to 11 years each, and a 50,000 NIS in fine (approx. $14,500), after accusing them of carrying out a stabbing attack.
