Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight Hebron events, particularly Israeli murder of handicapped Palestinian

RAMALLAH, March 10, 2018 (WAFA) – The developments in Hebron, particularly the Israeli army killing of a handicapped Palestinian youth, were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

Al-Ayyam said the murdered Palestinian was 24 years old and he was deaf, with al-Quds saying he was also mute.

The papers said dozens of Palestinians were injured in the clashes that broke out at contact points with the Israeli army in several areas of the West  Bank as part of the weekly protests against the US decision recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said fanatic Jewish settlers set up large tents in the yard of the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron, also known as Cave of the Patriarchs. Al-Quds said the act is intended to provoke the local Muslim population of Hebron, who hold daily prayers at the mosque, and is part of an effort to turn the divided mosque into a purely Jewish temple.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said Palestinian residents of al-Lubban al-Sharqiya were able to ward off for the second time an attack by Jewish settlers on their village. The settlers wanted to occupy a hilltop in the area.

In other news, the dailies highlighted the European Union’s condemnation of an Israeli law that allows the interior minister to deny residency in occupied East Jerusalem from and to expel Palestinians who have lived there all their life for various reasons.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted statements by the deputy British Consul General in Jerusalem saying his government is firm in its support for the two-state solution and an end to the Israeli occupation.

However, al-Ayyam said the British Labor Party suspended membership of activists who showed pro-Palestinian views on Facebook.

It also said an extremist Israeli member of the far right-wing Jewish Home party was appointed in charge of the East Jerusalem file in the Israeli Ministry of Justice.

This was also covered in al-Quds daily, which also said the extremist official is going to be responsible for kicking Palestinians out of their East Jerusalem homes in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood for the benefit of Jewish settlers.

The dailies said Israeli police prevented a Palestinian marathon in East Jerusalem that was supposed to coincide with another marathon organized by the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem that went through occupied territories.

Al-Quds said Palestinian organizations have petitioned the Israeli High Court against the dismal and inhumane conditions at the Israeli Ministry of Interior in East Jerusalem and that the court had set Thursday as the date to look into this matter.

It also said residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiyeh held the Friday prayer near checkpoints Israel had set up in their neighborhood that made life and movement very difficult.

The paper made a story about US so-called peace efforts as its main front page story. It said the White House held a meeting to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza and Lebanon heard of US plans to re-settle the Palestinian refugees in its territory.

Al-Ayyam touched on the same topic and said US peace envoy Jason Greenblatt called for getting rid of Hamas rule in Gaza as a way to solve the bad humanitarian situation there.
