Newspapers Review: US position on peace, Jerusalem and land grab in the headlines

RAMALLAH, March 1, 2018 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies tackled different subjects in their Thursday issue.

The headline of the main story in al-Quds said: Trump may recognize the two-state solution and open a consulate in Ramallah.

The lead paragraph however talked about US denial of any plan that calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and placing Jerusalem under international mandate.

It said the European Union was not yet ready to recognize Palestine as a whole and that each country can make that decision unilaterally.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and members of the international diplomatic corps in Palestine. The subject of the meeting was to brief the diplomats on the situation with the churches in occupied Jerusalem following the Israeli decision to tax the churches.

This decision has led the churches to close the Holy Sepulcher Church in Jerusalem for three days in protest and was reopened on Wednesday only after Israel suspended its taxation decision.

This subject was also well covered in the two other dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said France reiterated its support for the efforts of President Abbas to achieve peace.

The main headline in al-Ayyam tackled Israeli land grab in the occupied territories and demolition orders. It said the occupation forces seized 24 dunums of Burin land in the north of the West Bank and a number of homeowners in the Jordan Valley received demolition orders.

It said two Palestinians were injured in Amari refugee camp in Ramallah during an Israeli army raid, and soldiers showered a school in Hebron with tear gas causing serious suffocation among the students and faculty.

In other stories, al-Quds reported on the visit of a Hamas delegation to Cairo. It said Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh returned to Gaza after a three-week visit to Cairo. It quoted Izzat Rishq, a Hamas official, saying that the visit to Cairo intended to discuss the dangers facing the Palestinian cause and stressing that the Gaza Strip will never be a safe haven to anyone who threatens the national security of Egypt.

Al-Ayyam quoted Foreign Minister Riyad Malki saying the European Union is working to change the US “deal of the century” before submitting it.

It reported on a video by B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights group, showing soldiers shooting Yasin Saradih in Jericho at point-blank.

Al-Quds published an opinion piece for the Brazilian foreign minister re-stating his country’s support of East Jerusalem as capital of the Palestinian state.

The paper also reported on the cold weather conditions in Europe with al-Quds printing a picture showing snowfall in London. It said: “Siberia’s cold is freezing life in Europe.”
