Newspapers Review: Two Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, February 19, 2018 (WAFA) – News about the killing of two Palestinians in the Israeli strikes on Gaza hit the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Monday.

Al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Salem Mohammad Sabah, and Abdullah Abu Sheikha, both aged 17, were killed in the Israeli airstrike which targeted Salam neighborhood in the city of Rafah, in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli warplanes also hit locations in the city of Beit Hanoun, to the northeast of Gaza, and in the city of Khan Younes, in southern Gaza Strip.

The three newspapers said that the Israeli Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved of a bill that would see Israel deduct money from the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) tax revenues in protest of the stipends given by the PA to the families of Palestinian prisoners and those who were killed by Israel.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that the Palestinian national reconciliation government Sunday slammed Israel’s approval of the bill as a piracy, a theft of money, and another crime added to the Israeli occupations’ ongoing crimes committed against the Palestinian people.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds said that Secretary General of Presidency, Tayyeb Abdul Rahim, welcomed the Egyptian ambassador to Palestine, Essam al-Din Mouawwad.

It said, based on Palestinian head of mission to the UN in Geneva, Ibrahim Khreisheh, that Palestine is going to present four resolutions to the Human Right Council.

Al-Quds reported a statement by Nabil Shaath, advisor to President Mahmoud Abbas for external affairs and international relations, in which he said that Abbas’ speech at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday will give an explanation why Palestinians reject US President Donald Trump’s deal.

It quoted Fatah official Jibril Rjoub describing Trump’s position on Jerusalem as stupid.

Two hundred extremist Jews Sunday broke into al-Aqsa mosque, while other settlers assaulted a Palestinian bus driver who works for the Israeli transportation company Egged, near Hebron in the southern West Bank, according to al-Quds.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli army reportedly exposed two Islamic Jihad cells that were planning to attack Israeli targets.

It quoted Hamas officials saying they discussed with ousted Fatah official Mohammad Dahlan establishing a joint committee to run the Gaza Strip.
