Newspapers review: Demolitions, Netanyahu’s scandal focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, February 15, 2018 (WAFA) – The demolition of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem and Hebron districts and the scandal facing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Thursday.

Al-Ayyam reported that Israeli occupation forces demolished Palestinian property in Hebron and the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Safafa.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida explained that Israeli forces demolished two Palestinian homes in Beit Kahel town, west of Hebron, and two others in Beit Safafa.

On the other hand, al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to report that Israel occupation authorities have started the construction of a settler complex designed to Judaize in East Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam explained that the complex is located to the west of Al-Buraq Plaza, also known as the Western Wall.

Al-Quds opted to highlight Israeli police’s recommendations to charge Netanyahu with corruption.

It said the police recommendations have dealt a serious blow to Netanyahu’s local and international stature.

The other two dailies added that Netanyahu rejected calls that he resign and vowed to remain in office.

The dailies also reported that Israeli Jewish settlers severely beat a Palestinian youth in East Jerusalem, causing him severe wounds.

Highlighting other settlers’ attacks, al-Quds said that settlers stole dozens of sheep belonging to a Palestinian farmer in Iraq Burin, southwest of Nablus.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that settlers attacked Palestinian civilian homes in Assira al-Qibliya town, south of Nablus.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Israel has seized property and bank accounts belonging to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said that President Mahmoud Abbas concluded his official visit to Moscow with visiting the Russian Orthodox Patriarchate.

Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki was reported in al-Ayyam stating in this regard that Russian President Vladimir Putin listened with interest to Abbas and offered him important advice.

Presidential Advisor Nabil Shaath was also reported in al-Ayyam stating that several international actors have indicated their willingness to develop a new formula for the peace process.

The dailies also spotlighted Omani Foreign Minister Yousef bin Alawi’s statements during his visit to the occupied Palestinian territories.

Bin Alawi was reported stating that the establishment of the Palestinian state has become a “strategic necessity” for the world.

Al-Ayyam printed a photo for bin Alawi and Governor of Hebron Kamil Hmeid making a visit to the Ibrahimi mosque.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was reported in al-Ayyam stating that the so-called US new plan for Middle East peace is “fairly well advanced” and that President Donald Trump would decide when to announce it.

Al-Quds added that the electricity crisis gripping the besieged Gaza Strip was further exacerbated as a result of the stoppage of work in the remaining power generator. Al-Ayyam explained that Gaza’s sole power plant has shut down as a result of fuel shortage.
