Newspapers Review: Killing of Palestinian north of Hebron focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, February 8, 2018 (WAFA) – The killing of a Palestinian teenager following an alleged stabbing attack north of Hebron hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Thursday.

The dailies reported that Hamzeh Yousef Zamaareh, 19, from Halhoul, north of Hebron, was killed by an Israeli security guard following an alleged stabbing attack at the nearby illegal Karmi Tsur settlement.

Al-Ayyam reported that Israeli forces injured scores of Palestinians during clashes that erupted following the killing of Zamaareh.

The dailies also reported that Israeli forces shot and critically injured a Palestinian teenager during a raid into Kafr Aqab neighborhood, north of East Jerusalem.

The teenager, identified as Nizar al-Lowzi, 16, was reportedly hit with three live rounds in the face, chest and thigh before being rushed to a hospital in Ramallah.

It added that forces also injured 30 Palestinians during clashes at the entrance of Jericho city. A total of 21 reportedly were injured with rubber-coated steel bullets, and nine others suffered from tear gas suffocation.

According to al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida, thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral procession of Khalid al-Tayeh in Iraq al-Tayeh village, east of Nablus.

Al-Tayeh, 22, died on Tuesday after he succumbed to wounds he sustained during clashes with Israeli troops in Nablus city on Tuesday.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Palestinians foiled Israeli Jewish settlers’ attempt to kidnap two Palestinian children from Madama village, southwest of Nablus.

Highlighting other Israeli assaults against Palestinians, the dailies said Israeli occupation authorities demolished a Palestinian house in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Al-Quds added that Israeli occupation authorities removed a container that was used for residential purposes in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina.

Al-Ayyam said that an Israeli Jewish settler rammed his vehicle into a Palestinian man south of Nablus.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli forces detained scores of Palestinians during multiple overnight raids across the West Bank.

Al-Quds spotlighted an interview Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas gave to the Russian news agency Interfax ahead of his visit to Russia on Monday.

It reported Abbas stating that he would  call on Russia to play a greater role in the Middle East peace process and describing the Middle East Quartet as no longer being a suitable peace broker.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Palestinian Presidency welcomed the upcoming “historical” visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to be in Ramallah on Saturday.

Al-Ayyam added in this regard that the Palestinian and Indian sides would sign several bilateral agreements during the visit.

Regarding the humanitarian crisis that has further deteriorated as a result of the electricity crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip, al-Quds reported US Department of State calling on the international community to deliberate on Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Egyptian authorities opened Rafah border crossing for three days starting on Wednesday. Al-Quds added that 78 Palestinians traveled via the crossing.

Al-Quds added that Hamas movement has placed its military wing, al-Qassam Brigades, on high alert and evacuated its camps in anticipation of an Israeli military escalation in Gaza.

It said that members of the Salameh family have successfully foiled an Israeli settlement firm’s attempt to seize 218 dunums of their land in Khallet Hassan area in Biddya town, southwest of Nablus.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh’s statements in response to US ambassador to Israel David Friedman.

Abu Rudeineh was reported stating that the ongoing Israeli occupation was the main reason of violence in the region.
