Newspapers review: Arab League’s meeting on Jerusalem, Gaza explosion focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, February 2, 2018 (WAFA) – The Council of the Arab League’s meeting on Jerusalem in Cairo and the home explosion in Gaza city dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Friday.

Al-Quds reported that that Arab foreign ministers called for the establishment of a multilateral mechanism ]under the umbrella of the United Nations (UN)[ to sponsor the peace process.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added that the Arab states affirmed their rejection of any deal or initiative that was not consistent with the international terms of reference of the peace process.

On the other hand, al-Ayyam opted to cover the home explosion in Gaza city as its main front page news item.

It reported that seven Palestinians died and over 20 others were injured in a home explosion in Sabra neighborhood in Gaza city.

Al-Quds said that eight Palestinians died in the home explosion, which reportedly occurred when a family member deliberately set a gas canister on fire during a family dispute.

Quoting well-informed US sources, al-Quds reported that US President Donald Trump’s team suspended the finalization of the so-called “Deal of the Century” for resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

It also reported that Israeli forces delivered order to demolish seven Palestinian buildings in Susya area, east of Yatta, south of Hebron.

It also reported that Israeli police shot and injured a number of Palestinians in East Jerusalem neighborhoods of Shufat and Hizma.

It said that Israeli Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan extended an order sealing a number of Palestinian institutions, including the Orient House, in East Jerusalem.

The dailies highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev in Ramallah.

They said that Abbas briefed Patrushev on the latest developments in the Palestinian arena and stressed the Palestinian leadership’s interest in developing and strengthening bilateral Palestinian-Russian relations.

Al-Ayyam highlighted the emergency meeting of the international donor group for Palestine, the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee’s (AHLC), in Brussels.

It said that the donors’ meeting affirmed their support for the two-state solution and ongoing support for Palestinian state and institution-building.

Al-Ayyam also reported that Israel condemned the report that was released by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights  (OHCHR) and identified 216 businesses that were linked to Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

It added that the US slammed the report as “a waste of time and resources”.

Referring to a report by Le Monde Diplomatique, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that an EU mission released a confidential report calling for stricter measures against Israel.
