Newspapers review: Funeral of slain Palestinian teen, Duheisha raid focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, January 5, 2018 (WAFA) – Suppressing the funeral procession of a Palestinian teen who was killed by Israeli forces in Ramallah district and the military raid into the Duheisha camp hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Friday.

Al-Quds reported that a number of Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli forces, including a critical injury, during clashes in Ramallah-district village of Deir Nitham village and Bethlehem-district camp of Duheisha.

Al-Ayyam reported that Israeli forces suppressed the funeral procession of 16-year-old Palestinian teen Musaab al-Tamimi in Deir Nitham and raided Duheisha camp, shooting and injuring 20 Palestinians. According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, the number of injuries was 11.

The dailies reported that thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral procession of al-Tamimi in Deir Nitham village.

They noted that a Palestinian youth was critically injured after being shot by Israeli forces during clashes that erupted following al-Tamimi’s funeral procession in Deir Nitham.

Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli troops conducted raids that triggered clashes in East Jerusalem neighborhoods of Silwan and al-Issawiya, firing tear gas canisters at local Palestinians.

Highlighting weather conditions, the dailies reported the Palestinian Meteorological Department saying that occasionally torrential rain showers were anticipated to drop with gusty winds and warning of flooding.

Al-Quds reported the Jerusalem District Company declaring a state of emergency in preparation for the low pressure system.

Al-Quds reported that Israel plans to approve new settlement construction plans in the West Bank during the next week.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida explained Israeli ‘Defence’ Minister Avigdor Lieberman approved the construction of 2,270 new settler units in the West Bank.

According to al-Quds, Hamas might attend the upcoming meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Central Council scheduled to take place on January 14 in Ramallah.

It reported Israeli human rights watchdog Peace Now slamming Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party resolution urging legislators to annex West Bank settlements as reinforcing apartheid.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian human rights organizations and Foreign Ministry slamming the approval of a bill that calls for enforcing death penalty against Palestinian prisoners accused of killing or injuring of Israelis by the Knesset as a “racist crime” and “state terrorism”.

Moreover, al-Quds and al-Ayyam spotlighted US President Donald Trump’s threat to cut annual aid to the Palestinians.

Al-Quds reported Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee Saeb Erekat stating the US administration has moved into a new phase of imposing solutions on the Palestinians.

Al-Ayyam said that a Palestinian young man was instantly killed after being run over by an Israeli settlers’ bus on the Jerusalem-Hebron highway, known as Road 60, near al-Khader town, south of Bethlehem.

It added that Israeli occupation authorities have opened an “investigation” into the death of Gaza double-leg amputee Ibrahim Abu Thuraya, who was killed by Israeli troops during clashes at a Gaza borderline demonstration in December.
