RAMALLAH, December 5, 2017 (WAFA) – Efforts to ramp up warnings against US President Donald Trump’s likely intention to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel within days hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.
Al-Quds reported that President Mahmoud Abbas has informed Washington that he refuses any change to the status quo in Jerusalem.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that Abbas has proceeded with his diplomatic efforts, making contacts with regional and world leaders to prevent US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said Abbas has informed Washington that any adverse action on Jerusalem would “free the Palestinian leadership from any previous understandings it had with the US administration.”
Abbas reportedly made such a warning as part of an official letter that was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Ziad Abu-Amr to the US Consul General in Jerusalem Donald Blome during a meeting in Ramallah.
Furthermore, al-Ayyam reported the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is set to meet on the expected US move.
According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, OIC warned that ongoing attempts to change the historical and legal status of Jerusalem would pose a serious threat to peace and security in the region and throughout the world.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Jordan has stressed the need to preserve the historical and legal status of Jerusalem, while Turkey has warned that the US push to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would cause a “major catastrophe.”
Moreover, Israeli forces and Jewish settlers’ attempt to storm the Nablus-district village of Qusra also dominated the front page headlines in the dailies.
Al-Quds reported that a Palestinian was shot and critically injured during clashes with Israeli forces and settlers in Qusra.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added that a total of 12 Palestinians were injured with live ammunition and rubber-coated steel bullets during the clashes triggered by Israeli forces and settlers’ raid on the village.
The dailies reported that a senior Egyptian security official has arrived to the besieged Gaza enclave to follow up on and monitor the steps towards empowering the government to assume its responsibilities in Gaza.
Al-Quds spotlighted two reports by Israeli human rights group B’Tselem on forced displacement of Palestinians from Hebron and treatment of Israeli settlements’ waste in Palestinian lands.
Al-Ayyam reported that a Palestinian policeman was seriously injured after being stabbed by an assailant in Gaza.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Germany has provided 53 million euro to support the Palestinian government.
