RAMALLAH, October 3, 2017 (WAFA) – Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah presence in the besieged Gaza Strip along with his cabinet considered a major move towards reconciliation following a decade-long split between Fatah and Hamas dominated the front page headlines in the Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.
Al-Quds said the National Consensus Government received an official and popular reception following its arrival in Gaza.
Al-Ayyam said the government has started to assume its responsibilities in Gaza amidst an atmosphere of optimism.
Hamdallah was reported in al-Quds stating: “We came to end the division and the crisis gripping the besieged Gaza Strip as well as restore national unity and concord.”
He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating following President Mahmoud Abbas’ instructions that the government would dismantle the obstacles to reconciliation in order to save the besieged coastal enclave from catastrophe.
Al-Quds added in this regard Hamdallah announced several technical committees have been established to deal with the handover of government institutions and security.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added United Nations (UN) envoy for the Middle East peace process Nickolay Mladenov expressed “cautious optimism” about reconciliation.
It also reported Abbas stating the purpose of reconciliation is to enforce single authority, single law and single weapon.
According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Abbas is scheduled to meet with head of Egypt’s intelligence service major general Khaled Fawzy in Ramallah before the latter heads to Gaza.
Abbas was also reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida extending his condolences to his US counterpart Donald Trump over Las Vegas shooting that left at least 58 people dead and more than 500 injured.
Al-Quds said the Israeli Supreme Court issued an injunction preventing the demolition of a school in the Palestinian community of Abu Nawar, east of Jerusalem.
Highlighting West Bank raids, the dailies said Israeli forces shot and injured three Palestinians during clashes in East Jerusalem-district refugee camp of Shufat.
They added forces detained at least 19 Palestinians during multiple overnight raids across the West Bank.
Al-Quds also reported UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl expressing UNRWA’s readiness to cooperate with the Consensus Government in order to improve the living conditions of people in Gaza.
