Newspapers Review: The UN’s black list, Fatah meeting, Cairo talks focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, September 13, 2017 (WAFA) – The black list of companies working in the illegal Israeli settlements to be issued by United Nations Human Rights Council, as well as the meeting of Fatah Central Committee and the possible Fatah-Hamas talks in Cairo were the highlight of the main front pages stories in the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published Wednesday.

Al-Ayyam highlighted the report on the black list based on Israeli reports. It described this development as “another diplomatic setback for Israel.”

The paper, along with al-Quds daily, also talked about a Human Rights Watch report that said Israeli banks support illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

On the Fatah Central Committee meeting, al-Hayat al-Jadida said the meeting discussed Palestinian moves at the United Nations during the upcoming meetings for its General Assembly.

The meeting also discussed the speech by President Mahmoud Abbas at the assembly meeting, which is expected to take place on September 20.

The paper said that Abbas received a letter signed by one million Palestinian students intended to be delivered to the UN Secretary General demanding an end to the Israeli occupation.

Al-Quds highlighted the talks in Cairo between Hamas and Egyptian officials and said that Egypt is planning to push both Fatah and Hamas to reconcile their differences.

Al-Ayyam said Fatah ‘s Central Committee members Azzam Ahmad is expected to travel to Cairo in the coming days to follow up on reconciliation talks with Hamas.

Al-Quds also highlighted Israeli efforts to deny Palestinians from East Jerusalem the right to live in their city as part of its strategy to create an absolute Jewish majority in the occupied city. It said in the headline that Israel’s policy of pushing Palestinians out of the city is getting more vicious.

It said the Palestinian government informed Israel that it opposes removing four Ramallah-area villages from the government and annexing them to the Jerusalem governorate.

The government also objected to Israeli campaign to dismantle the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA).

Al-Quds quoted former Palestinian Prime Minister and president of the parliament Ahmad Qurei saying he does  not see a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict any time soon.
