RAMALLAH, May 16, 2017 (WAFA) – For the 30th day in a row, about 1800 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are continuing the Freedom and Dignity hunger strike amid strict repressive measures by the Israeli authorities to break their strike.
The media committee of the Detainees Affairs Commission and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said 36 hunger striking prisoners in Nafha prison were moved to hospital on Monday following a noticeable deterioration in their health conditions.
According to the committee, leader of the strike Marwan Barghouti was on Monday visited by the attorney of the Detainees Affairs Commission for the first time since the beginning of the strike a month ago.
Ahmad Saadat, leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine who is also participating in the strike, was also visited for the first time by an attorney from the Detainees Affairs Commission. The attorney, Farah Bayadseh, said Saadat is suffering from severe fatigue and significant weight loss.
The hunger strikers are calling for better access to medical care; increased visit duration from 45 to 90 minutes; removal of glass barriers during family visits; improved detention conditions including easing restrictions on the entry of books, clothing, food and other gifts from family members; installing phones to enable prisoners to communicate with their families and an end to the policy of administrative detention.
