Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight pro-prisoners protests, US peace efforts

RAMALLAH, May 13, 2017 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their Saturday issue the protests that raged in the West  Bank in support of striking Palestinian prisoners as well as US efforts to revive the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

The papers said 22-year-old Saba Obeid, from Salfit in the north of the West Bank, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers during a demonstration in support of striking prisoners in the Ramallah-area village of Nabi Saleh. He is the first person reported killed in the protests held in solidarity with 1600 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails who are on hunger strike since April 17 demanding better conditions and treatment.

The papers also printed pictures of the protests and Obeid.

The dailies said there is a chance the Israel Prisons Service is going to start  negotiations with the prisoners over their demands.

Al-Quds opted to make the US peace efforts as its top front page story with a headline going across the page saying: “(US President Donald) Trump is going to announce during his visit (to Palestine and Israel on May 23) the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state.”

The paper included several stories of reactions on the rapid US involvement in the peace process from Israel and Washington.

The dailies also said that Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, has captured the person who killed Mazen Fuqaha, a leader of its military wing al-Qassam Brigades, who had re-enacted his crime to investigators.

The papers also highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Russia and his talks with officials.

Al-Ayyam said a delegation of Russian businessmen is going to visit Palestine to develop business relations.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Norway’s largest workers has called for recognizing Palestine and boycotting Israel.

Al-Quds said 41 right-wing Israeli parliament members have signed a petition calling for the establishment of a new settlement near the settlement of Ma’ale Admumin, east of Jerusalem.
