RAMALLAH, May 9, 2017 (WAFA) - The Media Committee of the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners‘ society Tuesday published the summary of the 22nd day of the collective hunger strike of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, under the title of "Freedom and Dignity strike" since April 17, 2017.
- Detainees carry on the battle of freedom and dignity in Israeli jails, to demand their basic rights that the prisons‘ administration continues to deny. The most prominent demands include: ending the policy of administrative detention, ending the policy of solitary confinement, ending the policy of banning families‘ and lawyers‘ visits, ending the policy of medical negligence and other legitimate demands.
- The Prisons’ Service carries to impose abusive measures against the striking detainees. On a visit to detainees Nael Barghouthi and Muhammad Qiq, they said the prison service has put several detainees on collective trials, imposed financial sanctions and deprived them from accessing the cafeteria and receiving family and lawyer visits.
- The detainee Barghouthi who is serving 37 years in jails, said during the lawyer‘s visit that Ashkelon prison service has confiscated the prisoners personal belongings except for the brush and toothpaste. While the detainee Muhammad Qiq said they are being held in dirty and narrow cells. He added that he suffers from constant vomiting, dizziness and weight loss of 6 kg.
- The Israeli media is using media and propaganda to weaken the strike and spread rumors and lies about the strike, in order to create confusion in the Palestinian streets and among the striking detainees, and to demoralize the escalation of the strike. Where several letters from the prisons conclude that the detainees have high morale and are determined to carry on the strike until Israel agrees to achieve their demands.
- The National Committee called on the Palestinian people to participate in activities in support of the hunger strike.
- A demonstration is held in front of the headquarters of the United Nations at 12:00 pm.
