RAMALLAH, May 8, 2017 (WAFA) – The news of the Palestinian girl who was shot dead by Israeli forces at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem on Sunday evening, after she allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack, hit the front page headlines of the Palestinian Arabic dailies on Monday.
Al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat reported that Fatima Abed el-Rahman Hajiji, 16, from the village of Qarawat Bani Zaid near Ramallah, was shot dead by Israeli police at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem, after she allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack on the police.
The three dailies published news on the mass open-ended hunger strike, which was launched by the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails on April 17.
Al-Ayyam said that the health conditions of the Palestinian hunger striking prisoners, who are now on their 22nd day of hunger strike, is deteriorating. A minor headline said that several prisoners’ societies warned against Israel’s plans to seek doctors to force-feed the prisons.
Al-Quds said that the national committee for supporting prisoners called for a civil disobedience and a commercial strike in order to keep showing solidarity with the prisoners
Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Fadwa Barghouti, wife of imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, who said that Israel fabricated the video in which her husband can be seen eating despite being on hunger strike. She described the video, which was published by Israel, as “vile and fabricated.”
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that the relatives of six-year-old Ahmad Dawabsheh whose parents and 18-month-old brother were killed in the arson attack carried out by Israeli settlers in 2015, are going to sue Israel.
The two newspapers also published that Hamas announced the name of eight new members of its political bureau.
Reporting news on the Israeli scene, the dailies said that the Israeli Cabinet Committee approved a bill that declares Israel as the national home of the Jewish people. The bill also removes the status of Arabic language as an official language in Israel and downgrades it to a language that has a “special status in the state.”
According to the three newspapers, the Arab Joint List condemned the bill and considered it as a “war declared on Arabs in Israel.”
The dailies said French independent centrist Emmanuel Macron was elected President of France, beating Front National’s right-wing leader Marine Le Pen by an estimated 66.06% to 33.94%.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Macron on his victory and wished him success, while al-Quds said in its title that French people chose a “European future.”
