RAMALLAH, April 28, 2017 (WAFA) – The general strike held across the occupied Palestinian territories in solidarity with some 1,800 hungers-striking Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails hit the front page headlines in local Palestinian dailies.
The dailies reported Palestinians across the West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip held a general strike in solidarity with hunger-striking Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida added scores of Palestinians were injured, some with live fire and rubber-coated steel bullets, during clashes that erupted across the West Bank as the mass hunger strike entered its 11th day.
Al-Quds said Israeli forces shot and injured a number of Palestinians with live fire in the southern West Bank city of Hebron and the Ramallah-district villages of Deir Abu Mashal and Nabil Saleh.
Besides, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said the Palestinian Authority (PA) notified Israel that it would stop paying for electricity Israel provides to the besieged Gaza Strip.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported member of Fatah Central Committee Azzam al-Ahmad stating: “Hamas has either to disband the administrative committee ]in charge of running Gaza affairs[ and hand over Gaza to the government or fully bear the expenses of governing Gaza.”
The dailies said President Mahmoud Abbas and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi are scheduled to meet Saturday in Cairo.
Highlighting Israeli media reports, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Israel on May 22.
During his visit, the newspapers added, Trump would recognize “unified” Jerusalem as capital of Israel. Al-Quds said Trump would make such a recognition in return for supporting the establishment of Palestinian state.
It reported member of Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee Ahmad Majdalani denying news that the PLO ceased the allocations of PLO factions.
It also reported Reporters Without Borders (RSF) saying Israel is placing restrictions on Palestinian and international reporters.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israel scrambles to prevent the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) from passing a resolution on Jerusalem.
They added Israeli forces destroyed water pipelines providing services to the village of Bardala, east of Tubas, in the northern Jordan Valley.
