Palestinians observe general strike in support of hunger striking prisoners

RAMALLAH, April 27, 2017 (WAFA) – Palestinians across the West Bank and the Gaza Strip observed Thursday a general strike in support of the approximately 1,800 hunger striking prisoners and detainees in Israeli jails.

Public and private institutions, including schools and universities, shops, transportation and other facilities were all shut down, with the exclusion of health services and secondary school examination students.

Meanwhile, the Union of Transport announced that Thursday will be a day of general strike in all the districts of the West Bank and Gaza.

About 1,800 Palestinian detainees have joined the hunger strike and the number is expected to rise as more detainees are joining it. The hunger strikers are demanding better conditions, more contact with relatives, and an end to Israel’s practice of detention without charge or trial.

The strike support committee said health condition of most of the strikers is deteriorating with some taken to prison clinics.
