Newspaper review: Fatah rejection of Hamas’ measures focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, April 9, 2017 (WAFA) – A statement by the Fatah Central Committee regarding Hamas’ recent measures hit the front pages of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Sunday.

Al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the Fatah Central Committee stated its rejection of the recent decision and measures taken by the Hamas de facto government in the Gaza Strip. Fatah called Hamas to take back its measures as that could be the only way to bring back the unity and end the Fatah-Hamas conflict.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that thousands of Palestinians in Gaza marched in protest of the Palestinian Authority‘s decision to impose salary cuts on PA‘s employees in Gaza.

On a different topic, the three dailies reported the death of the well-known Palestinian poet Ahmad Dahbour, 71, in the city of Ramallah. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Abbas sent a letter of condolences to his family.

The tensions in Ain al-Hilweh, the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, were reported in al-Ayyam and al-Quds. They said two people were killed and 21 were injured due to the clashes that erupted between Palestinian joint forces and an Islamic militant group.

Al-Quds reported that Israeli forces raided the city of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank and nearby Aida refugee camp.

Al-Quds also said that Israel plans to build malls, showrooms and an information center for settlers in the neighborhood of Silwan, in East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds said that Abbas approved the first Palestinian law on education, marking a “historical and a national” achievement, as said by Sabri Saidam, the Minister of Education and Higher Education.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said that Abbas opened a new studio in “Palestine TV” for broadcasting news in Ramallah. He praised the qualitative development of the Palestinian state media.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said Social Responsibility Regional Network awarded the city of Jerusalem the 2017 award of “Socially Responsible Arab City”. This came as Abbas welcomed a delegation from the network to the presidential headquarters in the city of Ramallah.

Al-Quds said Palestinians mark on Sunday 69 years after the massacre of Deir Yassin, a Palestinian village at the western entrance to Jerusalem, where Zionist terror gangs led by former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin murdered and executed between 250 and 360 Palestinian women, men and children in 1948 .

Reporting the upcoming local elections, al-Ayyam said that the elections will take place in 152 population centers and that 739 electoral lists were approved.
