Newspaper Review: Fatal shooting of Two Palestinians in Gaza Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, January 16, 2016 (WAFA) – The fatal shooting of two Palestinians by Israeli forces during protests along the Gaza border hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies reported that two Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.

Furthermore, the three dailies covered in their main front page news items the funeral processions of three Palestinians recently shot dead by Israeli forces.

They reported that huge Palestinian crowds attended the funeral processions of Muayyad ‘Awni Jabbarin and Haitham Yassin in the Hebron town of Sa‘ir and the Nablus town of ‘Asira Ash-Shamaliya.

It is worth noting that both Jabbarin and Yassin were shot dead by Israeli forces following alleged stabbing attempts at Beit ‘Einun junction, northeast of Hebron, and the entrance of ‘Asira Ash-Shamaliya, north of Nablus, last Thursday.

Furthermore, the three dailies reported that dozens of Palestinians were injured during weekly Friday confrontations with Israeli forces across the West Bank.

The three dailies highlighted a pending EU draft resolution that could lead to sanctions against illegal Israeli settlements across the West Bank.

Al-Quds reported in this regard intending to step up its measures against Israeli settlement and occupation, the EU would pass a draft resolution on Monday.

Al-Ayyam reported that the EU is prepared to impose more sanctions on Israeli settlements, while al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the EU is expected to pass a tough resolution on settlements and the two-state solution.

Highlighting Israeli government’s reaction, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that it has declared a state of emergency in order to tone down the draft resolution.

Al-Quds reported that Rami Levy, the Israeli founder of a popular supermarket chain bearing his name, has set up a supermarket on the outskirts of Qalandiya industrial zone and opposite to the Jerusalem town of al-Ram purportedly to encourage co-existence.

Furthermore, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted a proposed Israeli bill that would clamp down on the foreign funding of NGOs in Israel.

Al-Ayyam reported in this regard that the Israeli government has stepped up its harassment campaign against peace-supporting NGOs. Al-Hayat al-Jadida described the proposed bill as “authoritative”.

They also highlighted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks during a meeting with the Likud’s bloc in the Knesset, in which he called for banning the Islamic call for prayer (Adhan) and polygamous marriage in the Arab towns inside the 1948 preoccupied land, Israel.

To be noted, “Under Islamic marital jurisprudence, Muslim men are allowed to practice polygamy, that is, they can have more than one wife at the same time, up to a total of four.

Furthermore, Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee, Saeb Erekat, was quoted in al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating that, the time has come to divest from all companies complicit in the consolidation of Israeli occupation and settlement construction.”
