Newspaper Review: Land Confiscation in Nablus, Funeral of Palestinians Killed in October Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, December 30, 2015 (WAFA) – The funeral procession of two Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in October and Israeli military order to take over 500 dunums of land in the Nablus villages of Jurish and Qusra hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported in their main front page news articles that two Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in October were laid to their rest in the Jerusalem town of Abu Dis and the Hebron town of Yatta.

The two Palestinians were identified as Mazin Hasan Ureiba, 37, from Abu Dis and Eiad Id‘ies from Hebron.

Al-Qud and al-Ayyam added that the funeral procession of Baseem Salah, whose body was released by Israeli authorities, was postponed to Wednesday.

It is worth noting in this regard that Id‘ies was shot dead after he allegedly stabbed an Israeli soldier using a screwdriver in Hebron on December 24, whereas Ureiba was shot dead near Hizma on December 3, after he allegedly opened fire on Israeli forces, injuring two.

Salah, meanwhile, was shot dead on November 30, after an attack that left an Israeli police wounded.

Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Ayyam highlighted the Israeli plans to take over 500 dunums of Palestinian-owned land in the northern West Bank district of Nablus.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli forces handed stop-construction notices for 15 Palestinian houses in Battir village, west of Bethlehem.

They also reported that Baruch Marzel, an extremist rabbi, and Israeli forces chased and assaulted a Palestinian girl in Hebron. The girl was identified as Dana Abu Irmieleh.

It also reported that Israeli occupation authorities has gave the family of ‘Ala’ Abu Jamal 48 hours to evacuate their house as a prelude for planned demolition, a step that was numerously described  as a collective punishment.

Regarding Israeli Housing Ministry’s plans to build over 55,000 illegal settler units in the West Bank, including building in E1 zone, east of Jerusalem, al-Quds reported on the Palestinian cabinet as warning against such plans.

It also reported that Israeli renewed plans for massive settlement construction in E1 area, between the West Bank settlement bloc of Ma‘aleh Admumim and East Jerusalem, has been widely condemned by Palestinians and slammed as a harbinger of an end to the two-state solution.

The Palestinian cabinet was also reported in the three dailies as having formed a committee that would examine all ideas and initiatives to solve the Rafah border crossing’s crisis.

Al-Ayyam also reported on the cabinet as stating that it is obliged to adopt an austerity policy on all fronts and to reduce appointments as means to bridge a 2016 budgetary funding gap of $386 millions.

Furthermore, al-Quds reported that Israeli Central Court has reversed a decision to ban Yehuda Etzion, who attempted to detonate the Dome of the Rock mosque.

In the wake of the video footage that showed Jewish settlers celebrating the killing of Dawabsha family and stabbing a photo of 18-month-old toddler ‘Ali in a wedding part, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli police arrested four Jews, including the groom.
