Three deaths from Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Gaza amid warnings of a looming health catastrophe

GAZA, August 4, 2025, WAFA – The Ministry of Health announced on Monday the death of three individuals due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), amid serious warnings of a rising number of acute flaccid paralysis cases among children, as a result of the deteriorating health and environmental conditions in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In a press statement, the Ministry explained that two of the deceased were minors under the age of 15, who died after efforts to save them failed due to the lack of essential treatment caused by the ongoing blockade, which has led to a severe shortage of medicines and critical medical supplies.

Medical examinations revealed the presence of non-polio enteroviruses, indicating a severely compromised health environment conducive to the uncontrolled spread of infectious diseases. This risk is compounded by continued aggression and worsening child malnutrition in the Strip.

The Ministry emphasized that ongoing environmental damage and limited access to treatment directly threaten to allow the syndrome to spread further, potentially developing into a major public health crisis.

It called on relevant authorities, international organizations, and humanitarian agencies to urgently intervene to provide life-saving treatments and to act immediately to lift the blockade imposed on Gaza, warning that these are not merely isolated deaths, but a warning of a possible infectious health catastrophe.
