RAMALLAH, August 4, 2025 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs affirmed on Monday that Palestinian women held in Israel's Damon Prison are subjected to ongoing violations by the prison administration.
The Commission's lawyer, speaking on behalf of prisoner Intisar al-Awawdeh, 52, from the town of Karma near Hebron, who has been detained since May 13, 2025, recounted and described the harassment during and after her detention.
“Around 9:30 in the morning, a large number of Israeli soldiers raided my home. They asked for my name, sized my phone and computer, and arrested me,” Al-Awawdeh said.
“They blindfolded me, tied my hands, and refused to let me change my clothes. There was no female soldier with them. They shoved me repeatedly and transported me in a military jeep,” she recounted.
Al-Awawdeh was taken to interrogation center in Kiryat Arba, then to the al-Maskobiyya detention center, where she was strip-searched and held for 22 days.
Describing the inhuman conditions in al-Moskobiya: "The cell was dimly dark and windowless. The water was undrinkable." Al-Awawdeh added, "I was then transferred to the Sharon prison, where the humidity reaches the point of mold, the floor is extremely dirty, like a garbage dump, and foul odors emanate from everywhere. The food is poor of in quantity and quality."
"In Damon Prison, the conditions are extremely harsh. There is no natural ventilation in the rooms, no personal hygiene supplies, and most women suffer from skin rashes due to heat, sweat, and humidity.”
She also highlighted how women denied exposure to sunlight, as the outdoor yard is monitored by surveillance cameras, deterring detainees from removing head coverings. As a result, many suffer from vitamin D deficiency and hair loss.
"We continue to suffer from a shortage of clothing and underwear, constant and sudden inspections, It causes anxiety among female prisoners, especially among minors and pregnant women," she concluded.
