RAMALLAH,
July 15, 2015 (WAFA) – The historic deal that was struck Tuesday between Iran
and major world powers together with Israel’s plan to build new settler units
inside the ‘Givat Eitam’ settlement to the south of Bethlehem hit the front
page headlines in Palestinian dailies.
Al-Quds
and al-Ayyam covered the historic deal struck between Iran and major world
powers in their main front page news items.
Al-Quds
reported that the historic nuclear deal would end a 12-year-long crisis and
would lead to ]progressively[ lifting sanctions
imposed on Tehran.
Highlighting
International reactions to the deal, al-Quds reported that there has been an
‘international satisfaction’ about the deal.
Al-Ayyam
reported that the world ‘welcomed’ the deal and that US President Barack Obama
has affirmed that the US remains committed to Israel’s security and dispatched
US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter to Israel.
Highlighting
Israel’s reaction to the deal, al-Quds reported that Israel has considered the
deal a ‘mistake’.
Al-Ayyam
reported that the Israeli cabinet has unanimously rejected the deal and quoted
an Israeli expert as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
would launch a major campaign to stop the deal.
Al-Hayat
al-Jadida reported in this regard that Israel is prepared to ‘sabotage’ the
deal.
On
the other hand, al-Hayat al-Jadida covered Dutch Foreign Minister Bert
Koenders’ visit to the occupied Palestinian Territories.
It
reported that President Mahmoud Abbas received Koenders along with the Russian
Envoy to the Middle East Peace Process and members of Bahraini Friends of
Jerusalem Committee.
It
quoted Abbas as stating that international efforts to resume negotiations are
hampered by Israel’s perseverance to settlement construction.”
Moreover,
al-Quds and al-Ayyam covered Israel’s plan to build new settler units in ‘Givat
Eitam’ settlement to the south of Bethlehem.
They
reported that at the end of 2013 the Israeli government approved the
construction of 800 new settler units to the south of Bethlehem.
Al-Ayyam
reported Israeli Peace Now Movement as revealing that settlement
construction hasn't been frozen, but it has in fact doubled.
The
movement was also reported as revealing that since the beginning of 2015 Israel
has issued tenders for the construction of 643 settler units.
Israeli
military Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot was reported in al-Quds as expressing his
support for several Israeli commanders who were responsible for the killing of
Palestinians during the 2014 Israeli onslaught on Gaza.
Al-Ayyam
reported an anonymous senior Hamas official as saying that there would be a
détente in the ceasefire talks following the upcoming Islamic feast of Eid
al-Fitr.
In
the aftermath of a family dispute in Bethlehem that erupted into violence in
Beit Jala, near Bethlehem, where a man was
killed in fighting and a woman died after she jumped from a building set
ablaze, al-Ayyam reported Palestinian police as saying they have restored
security and order and that in the aftermath of violence, 70 stores and 18
apartments were set on fire.
