Newspaper Review: Deal between Iran and World Powers, Israel’s New Settlement Plan as Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, July 15, 2015 (WAFA) – The historic deal that was struck Tuesday between Iran and major world powers together with Israel’s plan to build new settler units inside the ‘Givat Eitam’ settlement to the south of Bethlehem hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam covered the historic deal struck between Iran and major world powers in their main front page news items.

Al-Quds reported that the historic nuclear deal would end a 12-year-long crisis and would lead to ]progressively[ lifting sanctions imposed on Tehran.

Highlighting International reactions to the deal, al-Quds reported that there has been an ‘international satisfaction’ about the deal.

Al-Ayyam reported that the world ‘welcomed’ the deal and that US President Barack Obama has affirmed that the US remains committed to Israel’s security and dispatched US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter to Israel.

Highlighting Israel’s reaction to the deal, al-Quds reported that Israel has considered the deal a ‘mistake’.

Al-Ayyam reported that the Israeli cabinet has unanimously rejected the deal and quoted an Israeli expert as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would launch a major campaign to stop the deal.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that Israel is prepared to ‘sabotage’ the deal.

On the other hand, al-Hayat al-Jadida covered Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders’ visit to the occupied Palestinian Territories.

It reported that President Mahmoud Abbas received Koenders along with the Russian Envoy to the Middle East Peace Process and members of Bahraini Friends of Jerusalem Committee.

It quoted Abbas as stating that international efforts to resume negotiations are hampered by Israel’s perseverance to settlement construction.”

Moreover, al-Quds and al-Ayyam covered Israel’s plan to build new settler units in ‘Givat Eitam’ settlement to the south of Bethlehem.

They reported that at the end of 2013 the Israeli government approved the construction of 800 new settler units to the south of Bethlehem.

Al-Ayyam reported Israeli Peace Now Movement as revealing that settlement construction hasn't been frozen, but it has in fact doubled.

The movement was also reported as revealing that since the beginning of 2015 Israel has issued tenders for the construction of 643 settler units.

Israeli military Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot was reported in al-Quds as expressing his support for several Israeli commanders who were responsible for the killing of Palestinians during the 2014 Israeli onslaught on Gaza.

Al-Ayyam reported an anonymous senior Hamas official as saying that there would be a détente in the ceasefire talks following the upcoming Islamic feast of Eid al-Fitr.

In the aftermath of a family dispute in Bethlehem that erupted into violence in Beit Jala, near Bethlehem, where a man was killed in fighting and a woman died after she jumped from a building set ablaze, al-Ayyam reported Palestinian police as saying they have restored security and order and that in the aftermath of violence, 70 stores and 18 apartments were set on fire.
