Newspaper Review: Dailies Indicate Gaza Floods Caused by Israel Dams

RAMALLAH, February 23, 2015 (WAFA) – The Gaza floods which were caused by opening Israel’s dams on the border with Gaza hit the front page headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds reported that dozens of Palestinian houses were swamped with water as a result to opening the gates of several floodgates by the Israeli forces to the east of Gaza Valley.

Al-Ayyam reported that approximately 100 Palestinian families were evacuated from their flooded houses as a result of opening the gate of an Israeli dam to the east of Gaza Valley and that people are concerned about the tragedy that will happen if more dams are opened.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that Israeli occupation forces have inundated al-Moghraqa. The three dailies printed a photo featuring two Palestinians navigating through floods in al-Moghraqa.

Covering the consequences of withholding Palestinian tax revenues by Israel, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not going to release the tax revenues before the upcoming Knesset elections.

Al-Ayyam added in this regard that United States Secretary of State John Kerry as warning about the risks of the ongoing withholding of the tax revenues.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Kerry warning and PLO Executive Committee member Saeb Erkat as affirming that Israel seeks to bring down the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Al-Quds reported that President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled on Monday to visit Saudi Arabia.

The three dailies reported that Abbas has been invited to attend an economic conference in Egypt.

Al-Quds quoted Head of the Palestinian National Council Salim al-Za‘noun as announcing that the council is scheduled to convene its ordinary session on 4-5 March. Al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard that the council is scheduled to discuss ways to surmount obstacles to Palestinian reconciliation and reconsider the nature of relations with Israel.

Al-Quds reported on UNRWA reiterating that a sum of $100 million is urgently needed to aid Gaza.

Covering daily Israeli occupation forces’ practices across the West Bank and Gaza Strip, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that four Palestinians were shot and injured with live bullets shot by Israeli forces in ‘Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem.

They also reported that a Palestinian young man was detained by Israeli police purportedly for stabbing an Israeli and that an Israeli court turned down an appeal against the demolition of Palestinian structures in the Jordan Valley.

It was reported that Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons are planning to take ‘escalatory steps’ on March 10th.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Palestinian private sector corporations have requested the government to introduce amendments to the income tax.
