RAMALLAH, September 22, 2014 (WAFA) – Palestinian
Prisoners, who were freed in Gilad Shalit prisoner-swap and later re-arrested by
Israel, will launch a one-day hunger strike on Tuesday in protest of their illegal
detention, calling for the need of a prompt intervention to insure their
release.
Dozens of prisoners who were freed as part of
the 2011 Shalit deal were once again re-arrested by the Israeli army last June.
Israel claims that these prisoners were rearrested
based on ‘secret files’, which can’t even be revealed to prisoners’ lawyers and
are used as a pretext to have them serve out the remainder of their sentences, noting
that many of them are sentenced to life in jail.
“Their
arrest is an act of reprisal and means that whats left of their lives would be
taken away following tens of years spent in the occupation’s jails,” said
Qaddura Fares, head of the Palestinian Prisoner’s Club (PLC).
He noted that prisoners are seriously considering
staging an open-ended hunger strike to call for their release.
