Israeli-American researcher warns of deepening international isolation of Israel

NEW YORK, October 9, 2026 (WAFA) – Israeli-American researcher Shira Efron, who specializes in Israeli national security and previously served as research director at the Israel Policy Forum and worked at the Tel Aviv-based Institute for National Security Studies, warned that Israel’s international isolation is deepening.

In an article published in The New York Times titled “This Is How to End Israel’s Isolation,” Efron highlighted declining public support for Israel in the United States — with the share of Americans holding an unfavorable view of Israel rising from 42% in 2022 to 60% — as well as mounting European pressure, boycotts and sanctions related to the settlements, and Israel’s growing international isolation.

Efron’s warnings carry particular weight because they come from within research circles concerned with Israel’s security and strategic interests.

Efron warned that Israel’s growing international isolation could jeopardize its international standing and its access to the diplomatic support, arms, trade, technology and research partnerships on which its security and economy depend.

She noted that a change in leadership could ease Israel’s isolation temporarily, but that a deeper shift would depend on the next government’s response to escalating colonist violence, the de facto annexation of the West Bank and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

She argued that curbing colonist violence, freezing annexation and reopening a horizon for Palestinian sovereignty could help Israel recover its international standing, markets and alliances.
