CAIRO, June 21, 2026 (WAFA) – The League of Arab States reaffirmed its rejection of any plans aimed at liquidating the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), stressing that the issue of Palestinian refugees remains central to the Palestinian cause.
In a statement issued by its General Secretariat on the occasion of World Refugee Day, the Arab League reiterated its rejection of all forms of displacement of the Palestinian people, whether from their land or within it. It also warned of the serious repercussions of Israeli plans aimed at forcibly displacing Palestinians and their impact on regional security and stability.
The League underscored the importance of strengthening refugee protection, ensuring their access to basic rights, and supporting host countries and communities that continue to shoulder increasing burdens as a result of hosting large numbers of refugees.
It further reaffirmed the vital role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), calling for the provision of adequate financial, political, and legal support to enable the agency to continue fulfilling its mandate. The League rejected any attempts to reduce, abolish, replace, or alter its role, or to change the legal status of Palestinian refugees.
The Arab League also called on the international community to continue supporting humanitarian organizations dealing with refugee affairs, foremost among them UNRWA and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in order to address the growing humanitarian challenges facing the Arab region.
