Gaza thalassemia patients face daily struggle for survival, medical sources report

GAZA, May 9, 2026 (WAFA) – Medical sources said on Saturday that thalassemia patients in the Gaza Strip are enduring worsening suffering that has turned their treatment journey into a daily struggle for survival.

In a statement marking World Thalassemia Day, the sources added that shortages of specialized medications, limited laboratory testing supplies, blood transfusions, and blood units, along with the destruction of specialized medical centers, dire social conditions, and repeated displacement, pose a serious threat to their lives.

According to the statement, 50 patients out of a total of 334 have died during the Israeli aggression, while 47 others were able to leave the Gaza Strip.

They said that 237 thalassemia patients are currently in Gaza, including 52 children under the age of 12 and 185 adults.

Medical sources warned that the destruction of laboratory infrastructure and the lack of laboratory testing equipment for preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic examinations could result in undiagnosed cases, undermining decades of preventive healthcare efforts.

They called on international health organizations to focus on the suffering of thalassemia patients trapped in deadly conditions that threaten global efforts aimed at preventing and managing the disease.
